What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up?

This is a very familiar question. From our youth and continuing into adulthood we often find ourselves wondering what were we put on this earth to do? As a first step to answering the question, individually one may ask himself some follow-up questions, “What makes me tick, what gives me motivation, and what are my dreams, passions & desires?” As a part of self-examination when we ponder our individual answers to these questions, we should then ask ourselves would Jesus be found with the same types of motivations, dreams and desires? Ultimately, when we are driven and motivated by passions, desires and dreams that we could not and would not substitute Jesus himself to carry out, then perhaps it would be a good idea to do a “dream & desire check” so that we may get the support of the Lord in getting to our divine destination.

The Word of God declares that “the steps of a [good] man are directed and established by the Lord when He delights in his way [and He busies Himself with his every step] Psalm 37:23 (Amplified Version). In other words when we take pleasure in and find ourselves doing what God commands, he gives us direction and whatever steps we make in the path that leads us to the next place, God is right there to back it/support it/to see to it that we get to the place where He is leading us. To be walking in the plan of God is most fulfilling and rewarding!

Why not allow God to answer the question, “What am I going to be when I grow up?” Why not pursue God’s plan? God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our paths. Love what He loves; want what He wants. Why not get in the Word of God and the work of God, casting all our cares upon him; knowing that he cares for us (1 Peter 5:7)? He desires that we take His yoke upon us, and learn of Him; He is meek and lowly in heart: and we shall find rest unto our souls as a result of simply taking on the burden of learning about the ways of the Lord and following in His ways (doing what He says) Matthew 11:29.  When we want what God wants, we get what God has for us.  So if we grow up in Him, we will be what He wants us to be when we grow up.
